Vol. 30

Happy Saturday Besties,

Need an end-of-summer cap for the weekend? The Honey Deuce is the pale pink cocktail every celeb is caressing at the US Open this year. Back in 2012, the drink was just $14 at the iconic tennis tournament, but in this economy, it rings in at $23 — And with 500K expected to be sold in 2 weeks, the US Open will make $12M on one single cocktail.

If you want to treat your BBQ guests to something trendy this weekend, you can make a dupe version OYO like this. 🍹

FACTS & STATS

  • 🤮 Update from HR: Yesterday is always the most popular day to call in sick — you want that 4-day weekend to end the summer. In fact, the total # of paid sick days taken is up 42% since 2019. Ironically, workers under 35-years-old are more likely to take sick days than those over 35.

  • 603: New Hampshire might need to add a 2nd area code. Right now, it’s 1 of just 11 single area code states. New Hampshirites live and die by the 603…

  • 47% of Millennial marriages now have a prenup… and lawyers reported that 20-25% of prenups include a pet prenup provision 🐶. Can’t risk weekend visits with Fido.

  • 500M people in the world have Facebook for 1 reason: FB Marketplace… and Jack is one of them. (He’s sent Nick 6 different armoire options)

ICYMI

📱Apple announced the date for its iPhone launch event: Monday 9/9.

  • What the leaks say: The new iPhone 16 will have a new color (bronze), a dedicated button for pics/video, and an Action Button. The 16 will likely come with AI…. Not Artificial Intelligence, Apple Intelligence (whenever that actually becomes available).

STUDIES SHOW…

Sports Betting has replaced the Stock Market. According to the study: Gambling Away Stability: Sports Betting’s Impact on Vulnerable Households” - which was conducted by professors at Northwestern, BYU, and U of Kansas.

  • What it found: That legalization of sports betting reduced net new investments in that state by 14%.

  • Our take: Gambling is fine when it takes the place of entertainment, but not when it takes the place of investment/savings.

STOCKS

Examples of the Rorschach test

How big was Nvidia’s earnings report this week? There were watch partiesfor an earnings report. This is what the Oscars of earnings calls meant.

  • The numbers: $NVDA stock is up 148% so far this year (2,700% in the past 5 years) and is the #2 most valuable company in the world, valued at $3T. Nvidia is so big, it makes up 7% of the entire US stock market.

  • Results: Sales more than doubled in 2nd Q, profits more than doubled too, and the outlook for the rest of the year was great. But Wall Street doesn’t know what to think…

  • The Takeaway: You could look at Nvidia’s numbers and walk away saying AI’s still booming, proven by huge demand for Nvidia’s AI chips. Or you could call this proof that AI’s a bubble, proven by overspending on AI chips by tech companies. It was like a Rorschach test: you could interpret it however you see it. FYI, here’s how the test works.

👾 Fun fact: Nvidia sold $3B on chips for video game consoles last quarter — its top client was Nintendo.

JUMPING IN…

TBOY-style to Crayola Crayons…

  • The factories in Pennsylvania produce 13M crayons/day, with ½ of the company’s sales happening in July and August.

  • Best Fact: Their earthly smell of a wax crayon is now trademarked. The smell is one of the top 20 most recognizable scents according to a Yale Study. Here are the other 19.

  • Crayola Color Census: Every few years, Crayola holds a new color-creating convention.

  • Economically speaking: Crayola is recession-proof. During the ‘08 recession and the pandemic, sales jumped as it became an affordable activity.

MARKET UPDATES

📉 From the Fed: On the 17th of Sept, our Central Bank will likely cut their master interest rate, which would reduce all other interest rates (mortgage rates, car loans, CCs). And that would finally make it easier for you to buy things.

  • The reason: Last month, inflation fell below 3% for 1st time since 2021. Now that runaway inflation appears fixed, the Fed is turning its attention back to job growth, housing, and investments (all the fun economic stuff). And it will cut interest rates to do so… after all, Jerome Powell said “the time has come”.

BEST TAKEAWAY

🐢 Get rich sloooow.

  • Fact: The S&P 500 has grown 11% per year since 2008 (full disclosure: For both of us, the S&P 500 ETF has been our biggest and best-performing investment).

  • Food for thought: If you invested $100 in the S&P 500 in 2008, it would be worth $500 today.

It’s an unsexy but important reminder… for more listen to our Sports Betting vs. Stock Investing Story.
