Vol. 28
Happy Saturday Besties,
The internet is going coo-coo for these chocolate muffins made famous by the Olympic Village cafeteria (specifically one Norwegian swimmer). But the Olympic cafeteria muffin is actually triple chocolate. So we jumped in TBOY-style on the numbers for “chocolate muffins” this week…
Google searches 5x’d to an all-time high
TikTok vids have passed 100M views
Carb count: estimated 600 calories each (perfect for carbo-loading/celebrating).
And we (actually Jordan Howlett) got the secret recipe…. you know what to do…

FACTS & STATS
🤬 F-word usage is at all-time highs…and it’s a super profitable. The top movie and top album of 2024 are all-in on F-bomb. In Deadpool vs. Wolverine, the F-word was used 116x. In Taylor Swift’s Tortured Poet Dept. the term was used 18x. It’s one of the few words that can be a verb, noun, adjective, and an adverb. (Let us know if you can think of another like it).
🥇 Olympic Medal Value: An Olympic gold medal is actually 92.5% silver — the IOC dictates the gold medal has 523 grams of silver, plated with 6 grams of gold. So based on the metal, the gold medal is worth ~$1,027, the silver is worth $535, and bronze just $4.60 (spoiler: It’s not actually bronze). But the bragging rights = priceless.
⏱️ 1/20 blink of an Eye: Noah Lyles finished 0.005 sec faster than the #2 guy in the closest 1-2 finish in Men’s 100M history. A blink of the eye lasts 0.1 sec — so 0.005 sec race was 1/20 shorter. And 1 time-keeping camera company had a major publicity moment off of it: Omega (owned by Swatch, one of the few stocks up last week).

Olympians are “Side Hustling” their sport — For the majority of Olympic athletes, being the best in the world doesn’t pay the bills.
Justin Best just won gold in rowing… but next week he’ll be jumping on a Zoom call because he’s also a full-time investment banker (LinkedIn don’t lie). His schedule looks like this: Wake up at 5:30am to train in East Bay, at work by 9:30am, train again after work at 5:30 pm, in bed by 11pm.
The 26-year-old went to Drexel in Philadelphia and now works at Union Square Advisors in San Francisco.
This is the norm for many Olympians: Almost the entire US swim team also has a day job. Breaststroker, Nic Fink is a full-time engineer.
And it’s not just Olympians: 36% of Americans have a side-hustle now, according to a Bank Rate survey. We even started our media company 12 years ago as a side hustle. Everybody’s hustling. Tell us yours… (reply to the email) 💪💪
STOCKS
Shake Shack was the surprise top stock of last week surging 20% like an over-swirled custard…
Chew on these numbers: Revenues rose 16% and profits 2x’d in the latest quarter — for its highest profit margin in 4 years. CEO Rob Lynch said top-sellers were seasonal sandwiches like the Carolina BBQ burger with fried pickles. But more interestingly, the ex-Papa Johns’ CEO also said...
Prices will stay the same. Because “pricing is not a way to drive sales” and Wall Street investors drooled on that. Despite Hot Deal Summer (read: $5 meal deals from McD’s to Wendy’s), the Shack is not launching a dollar menu… And consumers will still eat it up.
For more ➡️ The Wall Street Journal calls Shake Shack The Anti Fast Food Chain. We call it Smart Food.
BEST TAKEAWAY
To see where America’s values are, look at what’s tax-deductible. Hear us out…
Our tax code is determined by our government, which is determined by us voters. So tax deductions are a window into what we as a society want to encourage. For example…
Homeownership & higher education? ➡️ interest on loans is Tax Deductible
Work cars and home offices? ➡️ both Tax Deductible
Investing & risk taking? ➡️ losses are Tax Deductible
But Childcare? ➡️ A $2k tax credit. That’s it.
What this says: All of these things (minus childcare) can be paid for with pre-tax dollars, making them more affordable and signaling our society values them. To show we value parenting as a society, we have to financially incentivize it (we’ve both had kids in the past three years and we’re more aware of this now than ever).
