🏆 23-Year Old Head Coach

And Ozempic leftovers

This is Nick. This is Jack. And ‘tis the season to belt Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” without Scrooges complaining it’s too soon. But hold your cocoa: the Queen of Christmas has fallen to #2 on the US holiday charts behind Brenda Lee’s 1958 hit “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.” For the rest of the season, we’re keeping an eye on this chart like the NASDAQ…

1) A Post Ozempic World

After the first Ozempic Thanksgiving, extra stuffing may be the new normal.

The Turkey Day Ozempic Effect: You may have noticed a difference at the table this year, like Aunt Edna passing on seconds for turkey or a slimmer waistline on Uncle Frank. The reason? Ozempic, Wegovy, and similar weight loss drugs. We’re seeing demand heat up like Blazin Hot Cheetos…

  • 💉 $$$: The drugmaker, Novo Nordisk, is now the most valuable public company in Europe.

  • 💉 Hard to get: With overwhelming demand for the new drugs, Novo Nordisk is now rationing them. It helps to know a guy…

  • 💉 Plan of attack: Worried about fewer cravings from customers, snacks and sweets companies are altering their offerings. Krispy Kreme’s stock was even downgraded last month on Ozempic & Wegovy’s rise.

Who could come out a winner, economically speaking?

  • Tupperware: Eating less means more storage needed for leftovers.

  • Airlines: A study found that airlines could save $80M on fuel from lighter passengers.

  • TBD: Much is still unknown, but the drug could eventually be used by 93M Americans, according to one study.

What will the post-Ozempic world look like?...

Look at Blue Zones: Researchers have identified certain places where people live longer and healthier. Like Ikaria, Greece —  Okinawa, Japan — Ogliastra Region, Sardinia — Loma Linda, California — Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. NatGeo noticed 3 key things about these uber-healthy people that could give us a preview of a post-Ozempic world:

  • 😊 Finding purpose — For an 84-year-old Okinawan, that means training for a decathlon.

  • 🚶 Staying active “If I stayed home all day, I’d be sick,” according to an 85-year-old Sardinian who raises pigs.

  • 👯 Maintaining friendships  Experts of aging say elderly who live near loved ones live longer.

Wall Street’s focused on downsides of The Ozempic Effect, like less snack sales. But more productive, more active, and more social people would be an overall economic win.

2) When to Hire a 23-Year-Old

The top sports topic at our Thanksgiving dinners? Erin Matson — Who just became the youngest head coach to win the national championship. Under Matson, UNC’s women’s field hockey season ended in a double-OT shootout thriller to be named #1 again. Who needs 3-5 years experience anymore?

Who is she? Born in the year 2000 — and just last season — she was the most decorated player on UNC's team.

  • 🏑 As a player: She won 4 championships and was named Player of the Year 3x.

  • 🏑 As a coach: She nabbed the school’s 11th title in her 1st year as head coach.

But one of the best stories in college athletics is also a lesson off the field — for your job…

The Takeaway →

Shared experience beats Individual experience. We’re big fans of behavioral psychologist Adam Grant, especially this study he shared: Surgeons performed better the longer they were at the same hospital — But when those surgeons moved to a new hospital, their performance dropped. This tells us that work experience is more valuable when it’s with the same team. Coach Erin had that shared experience playing-then-coaching alongside that same team at UNC. The lessons for business:

  • For managers: Retaining people is paramount, as their experience on your team is extra valuable.

  • For individuals: Gaining experience with the same team is the most valuable experience.
